Emre Sübay, MD

Emre Sübay, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul. With more than 16 years in medicine, he evaluates a range of adult and paediatric eye conditions, including keratoconus, cataract, glaucoma, astigmatism, blepharitis, ocular migraine and eyelid twitching (myokymia), and he performs smart lens procedures.

Dr. Sübay graduated from Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 2010 and worked at the İstanbul Fatih Health Group Presidency from 2010 to 2011. He then trained as a research assistant in the Trakya University Department of Ophthalmology between 2011 and 2015, completing his specialist training at the Trakya University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology in 2015. He subsequently served as an ophthalmology specialist at Edirne Sultan 1. Murat State Hospital from 2015 to 2018 and at Zonguldak Atatürk State Hospital in 2018, before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2019. In 2021 he obtained the FEBO (Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology) qualification and completed the Forefront Refractive Surgery: LASIK & SMILE programme at London Vision Clinic. He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association, the Türk Oftalmoloji Association and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Sübay’s work concerns diseases of the cornea and lens. He assesses patients with keratoconus, a progressive thinning of the cornea, and with astigmatism, where the shape of the eye affects how light is focused. He also evaluates patients with cataract and, where appropriate, discusses smart lens procedures as one of the possible options. Whether a given procedure is suitable depends on the individual examination findings and is decided together with the patient.

Dr. Sübay also follows patients with glaucoma, a condition in which raised eye pressure can damage the optic nerve, and sees children with paediatric eye diseases. His practice further includes blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), eyelid twitching (myokymia) and ocular migraine, where visual disturbances are assessed to distinguish eye-related causes from other explanations.

How Dr. Sübay works with international patients

Dr. Sübay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before the visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as earlier eye examination records, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical eye examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling, although a physical examination may still be needed to complete the assessment.
