Assoc. Prof. Erdem Güven, MD

Assoc. Prof. Erdem Güven, MD is a specialist in Aesthetic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery who practices in the Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 28 years in medicine, and his clinical work centers on breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery, body contouring procedures, facial aesthetic surgery and reconstructive microsurgery.

Dr. Güven graduated from İstanbul University, İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, in 1998 and spent 1998–1999 as a clinical observer at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He completed his specialty training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2004 and joined the same department as a staff surgeon in 2006. He went on to train in maxillofacial surgery and in hand surgery and microsurgery, and holds Medical Specialization Board qualifications in Hand Surgery (2011) and in Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery (2012). He became an associate professor in 2011 and has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Group since 2019.

According to his published biography, he received the first prize in the clinical category at the 25th National Congress of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in 2003, and in 2013 he was an invited speaker at the Barcelona Breast Meeting, where he presented an endoscopic technique for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. PubMed lists 50 publications under his name between 2007 and 2026. They cover incision design for nipple-sparing mastectomy and direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, written with the breast surgery team at Acıbadem, breast reduction techniques for very large breasts, endoscope-assisted harvesting of the latissimus dorsi flap, microsurgical reconstruction of the face and jaws, facial fractures, contractures after burns and fingertip reconstruction. He is a member of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, the Turkish Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Turkish Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Güven’s practice is devoted to breast surgery. He performs breast reconstruction after mastectomy, planned together with the breast surgeons, as well as breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift (mastopexy). Each procedure is discussed with the patient in light of their anatomy, medical history and personal expectations, and the potential benefits and limitations of the different surgical approaches are reviewed before any decision is made.

His body contouring work includes tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), liposuction and J-Plasma-assisted contouring. For patients who wish to address changes after pregnancy, he offers mommy makeover procedures, in which several body contouring steps are combined into one coordinated treatment plan. His facial work includes facelift surgery, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and buccal fat removal.

On the reconstructive side, his training covers microsurgery, hand surgery and facial and jaw (maxillofacial) surgery, and his practice includes reconstructive surgery after skin cancer removal, including Mohs surgery. Whether a procedure is appropriate depends on the individual case, and not every patient who requests a particular operation will be a suitable candidate for it.

How Dr. Güven works with international patients

Dr. Güven consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as ultrasound, MRI or CT reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including whether surgery is advisable at all. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation with Dr. Güven before deciding whether to travel, although a physical examination is generally still needed before any surgical plan is confirmed.
