Prof. İbrahim Tuncay, MD

Prof. İbrahim Tuncay, MD is an orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist who practices at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His work concentrates on hip and knee replacement surgery and robotic surgery, together with sports traumatology and the treatment of knee and joint injuries. He has more than 34 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Tuncay graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his specialty training in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the same faculty in 1997. He served as a Medical Second Lieutenant at Elazığ Military Hospital in 1998–1999 and as an Assistant Associate Professor at Van Yüzüncüyıl University from 1998 to 2000. In 2001 he was a research fellow in extremity reconstruction and lengthening surgery at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Between 2000 and 2004 he worked at Zonguldak Karaelmas University Faculty of Medicine, and he became an Associate Professor in 2003. He then worked at Selçuk University Meram Faculty of Medicine (2004–2008) and, from 2008 to 2010, was founding Department Chair with a professorship position at Selçuk University Selçuklu Faculty of Medicine. In 2010 he joined Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology as a faculty member, became Department Chair in 2012 and Vice Rector in 2016. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2013. He has also held visiting professor appointments at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia (USA); JIS New Albany, Ohio (USA); Hamburg Endoklinik (Germany); and ATOS Clinic, Heidelberg (Germany). He is a member of the Hip Joint Preservation Surgery Association, the Extremity Reconstruction and Ilizarov Surgery Association, the Artroplasti Association and the Turkish Sports Injuries Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Tuncay’s clinical practice centers on joint disease and joint injury. He treats patients with osteoarthritis and other joint diseases, and performs arthroplasty, including hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery. Robotic surgery is part of his surgical practice. Whether a joint-preserving approach or joint replacement is considered depends on the individual findings, the stage of the joint disease and the patient’s overall situation, and this is discussed with the patient after assessment.

In sports traumatology, his work covers knee injuries and other joint injuries, including cruciate ligament tears and meniscus tears. The choice between non-surgical management and surgical treatment for these injuries is made on the basis of the clinical examination, the imaging findings and the patient’s activity level and expectations.

How Dr. Tuncay works with international patients

Dr. Tuncay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
