Mehmetzeki Yıldız, MD

Mehmetzeki Yıldız, MD is a neurosurgeon at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Neurosurgery unit. Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Yıldız’s practice involves the evaluation of low back, neck and back pain and the conditions that commonly underlie it, including disc herniation and spinal canal stenosis. Because many spinal conditions can be managed both conservatively and surgically, he reviews existing imaging and previous treatments before recommending a course of action. Treatment may range from non-surgical measures, such as spinal injections, to operative care. For patients with instability, deformity or certain fractures, he performs spinal fusion surgery; kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are among the procedures he offers for vertebral fractures. He also manages spinal and spinal cord injuries and operates on spinal and spinal cord tumors.

Dr. Yıldız additionally cares for patients with spina bifida and tethered cord syndrome, and performs rhizotomy where this is indicated. For selected patients with chronic pain that has not responded adequately to other treatments, he offers spinal cord stimulation. Whether a given procedure is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, the imaging findings and the patient’s overall health, and this is assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than decided in advance.

How Dr. Yıldız works with international patients

Dr. Yıldız consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their case with Dr. Yıldız before deciding whether to travel for in-person evaluation.
