Prof. Özgür Yağmur, MD

Prof. Özgür Yağmur, MD is a General Surgery specialist at Acibadem Adana Hospital in Adana, where he works within the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery and General Surgery units. Dr. Yağmur graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1982 and began his career the same year with compulsory service at the Ministry of Justice Silifke Prison medical practice. From 1985 he was a research assistant in the Department of General Surgery at Çukurova Faculty of Medicine, completed his general surgery training at Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and continued there as a specialist physician. He was appointed assistant associate professor in 1990 and associate professor (Doç. Dr.) in 1994. His training abroad included New York University, College of Medicine (1992), the Department of Liver Transplantation at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1992–1993), Rennes University (1994), Johns Hopkins Medical Center (1998) and Yale New Haven Transplantation Center for HPB surgery (2013), together with ICTEC workshops in Torino, Coimbra and London and a Euroicterus workshop in Kopenhagen. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2009. He is a member of the Turkish Surgical Association, Turkish Trauma Association, Çukurova Surgical Association, Türk HPB Association, Turkish Colon Rectum Surgical Association and American Society GI Surgery.

Clinical focus

Dr. Yağmur’s clinical work covers obesity surgery and robotic surgery, which are his registered subspecialties. His broader surgical practice includes hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, gastrointestinal surgery and colorectal surgery. His training at the Department of Liver Transplantation at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and at Yale New Haven Transplantation Center relates directly to his interest in liver and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

He also has a long-standing interest in trauma surgery. His published work includes studies on trauma scoring systems in blunt abdominal trauma, negative laparotomy in abdominal trauma and prognostic factors in rectal injuries, as well as papers on gallbladder perforations, amoebic abscess of the liver, intrabiliary rupture of liver hydatid cysts, colorectal smooth muscle tumors, Ogilvie syndrome, gastric cancer staging and hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery. The suitability of any surgical approach, including robotic or obesity surgery, is assessed individually for each patient.

How Dr. Yağmur works with international patients

Dr. Yağmur consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit.
