Assoc. Prof. Selen Kanar, MD

Assoc. Prof. Selen Kanar, MD is an ophthalmologist in the Ophthalmology unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. She has more than 15 years in medicine, and her clinical work concentrates on diseases of the retina, cataract, glaucoma and a range of other eye conditions in adults and children. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2025.

Dr. Kanar graduated from Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 2011. Between 2012 and 2016 she completed her ophthalmology residency as a research assistant at S.B.Ü, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital. In 2016 she worked as a specialist at Ağrı State Hospital, and from 2018 to 2022 she was a specialist doctor in ophthalmology at Health Sciences University Kartal Dr. Lütfî Kırdar Training and Research Hospital. In 2022 she completed the Euretina fellowship program at St. Thomas Hospital, London, where she worked as a specialist doctor in the Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Retina Department. The same year she was awarded her associate professorship in ophthalmology at Health Sciences University Kartal Dr. Lütfî Kırdar Training and Research Hospital, where she continued as an Associate Professor Doctor until 2024. She is a member of the Euretina Genç Uzmanlar Association, the European Retina Specialists Association and the Türk Oftalmoloji Association.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Kanar’s practice is the retina, including the assessment and management of retinal tears and detachment. Her published research reflects this interest and includes work on intravitreal injection treatments for diabetic macular edema, sterile endophthalmitis after intravitreal bevacizumab injection, retinal vein and central retinal artery occlusion, and functional vision rehabilitation in retinitis pigmentosa. She also has clinical experience in ocular stem cell treatment.

Beyond the retina, Dr. Kanar evaluates and treats glaucoma, cataract and hyperopia, and performs smart lens procedures. Her practice further covers blepharitis, eyelid myokymia and pediatric eye conditions. The appropriate approach in each case depends on the findings of the eye examination, the stage of the condition and the patient’s overall health, and is discussed individually.

How Dr. Kanar works with international patients

Dr. Kanar consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial review of records before travel or for follow-up questions, with the understanding that a full eye examination in person is often needed before a treatment plan can be confirmed.
