Prof. Dr. Sezgin Sarban

Prof. Dr. Sezgin Sarban is an orthopedic surgery and traumatology specialist at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are shoulder and elbow surgery, hip and knee replacement surgery, and robotic surgery. He has more than 43 years in medicine and speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Sarban studied at Ege University Faculty of Medicine from 1983 to 1991. From 1992 to 1997 he was a research assistant at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, completing his orthopedics and traumatology training there in 1997. He then worked as a specialist physician at İstinye State Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology from 1997 to 2001. Between 2002 and 2006 he was at Harran University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, becoming an associate professor in 2006. During 2004–2005 he spent time at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, Department of Adult Reconstruction Surgery New York University, New York, with a focus on knee and hip surgery. In 2007 he joined Florance Nightingale Hospital / Spine Surgery Center and Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He is a member of the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association, TOTBİD, Artroplasti Association, and the European Fedaration of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. His published work includes studies on bone repair in an experimental model, biochemical markers in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, suture techniques for meniscal repair, developmental dysplasia of the hip, and orthopedic techniques described in the 15th-century Ottoman period.

Clinical focus

Dr. Sarban evaluates and treats a range of conditions affecting the joints and the musculoskeletal system. These include osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, as well as sports injuries and sports traumatology, such as meniscus tears, cruciate ligament tears and muscle tears. In the upper limb, his work covers shoulder and elbow surgery, together with hand and wrist injuries and fractures. He also assesses patients with flat feet.

Joint replacement is a central part of his practice. He performs hip replacement and knee replacement surgery, and robotic surgery is among his subspecialty areas. Whether surgery is appropriate, and which approach is suitable, depends on the individual patient’s condition, imaging findings and overall health, and is discussed with the patient after a clinical assessment.

How Dr. Sarban works with international patients

Dr. Sarban consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit.
