Dr. Emel Özveri

Dr. Emel Özveri is a general surgeon at Acibadem Kozyatagi Hospital in İstanbul, where she practices within the General Surgery unit. She has more than 32 years in medicine. Her subspecialty areas are the treatment of hemorrhoids and anorectal diseases, and pancreatic, liver and biliary tract diseases. Alongside these areas, her clinical work covers hernia repair, thyroid surgery and mastectomy.

Dr. Özveri graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1994. From 1994 to 1999 she worked in the Department of General Surgery at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, completing her General Surgery training there in 1999. Between 1999 and 2006 she worked at the Acedemic Hospital Emergency Outpatient Clinic, and in 2006 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. She is a member of the İstanbul Medical Chamber and the Turkish Surgical Association. She has co-authored published research, including experimental studies on hyperthermic preconditioning in peritonitis, work on reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in colon and breast tumors published in Cancer Letters, a report on parastomal hernia treatment in the Journal of Colon and Rectal Diseases, and a study on the effect of estrogens on burn-induced remote organ inflammation in rats.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Özveri’s practice concerns anorectal conditions. She treats hemorrhoids and other anorectal diseases and performs hemorrhoid surgery, and she also manages anal fissure. Her second subspecialty area covers diseases of the pancreas, liver and biliary tract, where she is involved in the assessment and surgical care of patients with these conditions. Treatment decisions in these areas depend on the individual diagnosis, the findings of imaging and examination, and the patient’s overall health, and not every patient will be a candidate for surgery.

Her general surgical work also includes the repair of inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia, thyroid surgery, mastectomy for patients who require breast surgery, and the surgical treatment of small intestine cancer. Where a patient has been treated elsewhere, previous findings and treatments are taken into account when discussing further options.

How Dr. Özveri works with international patients

Dr. Özveri consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options, including whether surgery is appropriate. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation with Dr. Özveri before deciding whether to travel; a remote consultation may be used for an initial review of reports and imaging, with a physical examination taking place in person if a visit is planned.
