Assoc. Prof. Gül Dabak, MD

Assoc. Prof. Gül Dabak, MD is a Pulmonary Medicine specialist in the Pulmonology unit at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul. She has more than 34 years in medicine. Dr. Dabak graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed her specialty training in Chest Diseases at Heybeliada Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Hospital in 1998.

Her career includes chief assistant positions at Heybeliada Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital (1998–2005), Süreyyapaşa Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital (2005–2010 and 2013–2014) and İstanbul Kartal Koşuyolu High Specialization Training and Research Hospital (2010–2013). In 2014 she worked at İstanbul Occupational Diseases Hospital, and in 2015 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. Dr. Dabak completed tuberculosis mycobacteriology training at the Mycobacteriology Laboratory of National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver, USA (2003), and lung transplantation training at the Vienna University Medical School Cardiothoracic Transplant Unit (2008, European Respiratory Society Scholarship) and the Newcastle University Freeman Hospital Cardiothoracic Transplant Unit (2010, Thoracic Association Scholarship). Within the Turkish Thoracic Association Lung Transplantation Working Group she served as Executive Committee Member (2010–2012 and 2014) and as Chair (2012–2014). She is a member of the European Respiratory Society, the American Thoracic Society, the Türk Toraks Association, the Turkish Respiratory Research Association, the Turkish Medical Association, the İstanbul Medical Chamber, the Verem Savaş Association and the Association of European Respiratory Society Fellows. Her publications include work on pulmonary embolism, lung transplantation, tuberculosis testing and bronchoscopic imaging in the diagnosis of lung malignancy.

Clinical focus

Dr. Dabak evaluates and manages a range of respiratory conditions. Her areas of expertise include lung nodules, lung cancer and other thoracic cancers, and she performs bronchoscopy as part of the diagnostic work-up of pulmonary lesions. She also treats chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and pulmonary embolism.

Lower respiratory tract infections are a further part of her practice, including bronchitis and pneumonia. In addition, Dr. Dabak provides support for patients who wish to stop smoking. The appropriate diagnostic steps and treatment options depend on each patient’s condition and are discussed individually after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Dabak works with international patients

Dr. Dabak consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as CT, X-ray or MRI reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of travelling.
