Mehmet Beşir Sürme, MD

Clinical focus

Spine health is a central part of Dr. Sürme’s practice. He evaluates patients with spinal complaints, reviews their imaging and previous treatments, and discusses conservative and surgical options based on the individual clinical picture. His published clinical work in this area includes a series on intradiscal percutaneous radiopaque gel ethanol injection for pain in patients with lumbar disc herniation and an evaluation of spontaneous spinal epidural hematomas.

His second area of focus is neuromodulation. This includes deep brain stimulation, on which he has co-authored research examining motor and neuropsychiatric outcomes in Parkinson’s patients after subthalamic nucleus stimulation, and vagus nerve stimulation for epilepsy. He also works with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and sacral nerve stimulation. Suitability for any of these treatments is determined individually after a neurological and neurosurgical evaluation; not every patient is a candidate, and the potential benefits and risks are discussed before any decision is made.

How Dr. Sürme works with international patients

Dr. Sürme consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. For patients who are unable to travel initially, a video consultation can be arranged so that the case can be reviewed and the next steps discussed remotely.
