Prof. Muhsin Eraslan, MD

Prof. Muhsin Eraslan, MD is an ophthalmologist in the Ophthalmology unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2005 and completed his specialty training in ophthalmology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2010, having worked as a research fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology there from 2005 to 2010.

From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Eraslan worked as an ophthalmology specialist at Sinop Atatürk State Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic. He then returned to Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, where he held the position of Assistant Associate Professor Doctor from 2012 to 2017 and Associate Professor Doctor from 2017. In 2015 he was an Ophthalmology / Glaucoma Research Fellow at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. He joined Acibadem Healthcare Services in 2022 and has more than 21 years in medicine. He is a member of the Türk Oftalmoloji Association, the Turkish Medical Association, the International Council of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His published work includes a multicenter case series on standalone XEN implant versus combination with phacoemulsification, a 24-hour intraocular pressure monitoring study in uveitic glaucoma, optical coherence tomography studies comparing glaucoma with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, and a study of corneal collagen cross-linking in pediatric keratoconus. He is also a listed co-author of the ARTEMIS 2 phase 3 study of the bimatoprost implant in open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Clinical focus

Glaucoma is a central part of Dr. Eraslan’s practice. He assesses and manages patients with glaucoma, including childhood glaucoma, and his areas of expertise include glaucoma laser treatment and glaucoma surgery. The choice between observation, medication, laser or surgery depends on the type and stage of glaucoma, intraocular pressure findings and the condition of the optic nerve, and is discussed with each patient individually.

His practice also covers cataract, including childhood cataract, and smart lens procedures. In addition, he treats eyelid conditions such as eyelid ptosis and blepharitis, performs blepharoplasty, and offers excimer laser treatment. Whether a particular procedure is suitable is determined only after a full eye examination and review of the patient’s history.

How Dr. Eraslan works with international patients

Dr. Eraslan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as previous eye examination records, visual field tests, optical coherence tomography reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical eye examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel.
