Nilay Akagün, MD

Nilay Akagün, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Ankara Hospital in Ankara, where she works in the Ophthalmology unit. She has more than 23 years in medicine. Dr. Akagün graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2003. From 2005 to 2009 she was a Research Assistant at Ankara Training and Research Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic, and in 2009 she completed her specialty training at the Ankara Training and Research Hospital Department of Ophthalmology. Between 2009 and 2011 she worked at Kelkit Devlet Hospital (Mecburi Hizmet) in Gümüşhane. She then held clinical positions in Ankara at Private Turkuaz Ophthalmology Center (2011–2012), Private İlgi Ophthalmology Center (2012–2014), Private Ankasu Ophthalmology Center (2014–2015) and Veni Vidi Ophthalmology Center (2015–2020), followed by Liv Hospital Ankara from 2020 to 2023. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023. Alongside her clinical work, she has served as a Visiting Faculty Member at Atılım University English Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology (2003–2025) and at Yüksek İhtisas University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology (2021–2022). She is a member of the Türk Oftalmoloji Association, the Türk Cumhuriyetleri Oftalmoloji Association, the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER). Her publications include articles on persistent accommodative spasm, the use of autologous serum eye drops in recurrent corneal erosion syndrome and in a persistent corneal epithelial defect, and surgical treatment of canalicular injuries.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Akagün’s practice concerns refractive errors. She assesses and manages myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, and she also sees patients with glaucoma, a condition that generally requires ongoing monitoring of eye pressure and the optic nerve. Her work in paediatric ophthalmology includes the evaluation and management of amblyopia in children, for which early assessment is considered important.

Dr. Akagün also treats inflammatory and surface conditions of the eye, including blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins), conjunctivitis and uveitis. Wilson disease is also listed among her areas of expertise. The suitability of any particular approach depends on the individual patient’s findings and is determined after clinical examination.

How Dr. Akagün works with international patients

Dr. Akagün consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages.
