Prof. Özgül Altıntaş, MD

Prof. Özgül Altıntaş, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Ophthalmology unit with a subspecialty in neuro-ophthalmology. Her clinical work covers both pediatric and adult eye conditions, including strabismus, amblyopia, glaucoma, cataract, refractive errors, keratoconus, blepharitis, and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. She has more than 38 years in medicine.

Dr. Altıntaş graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. From 1994 to 1996 she worked as a health center physician in Silivri, İstanbul and Söğütlü, Sakarya. She completed her ophthalmology training at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and remained there as a faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology from 2001 to 2016. She was appointed Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2011. In 2016 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. She is a member of the Türk Oftalmoloji Association, the International Strabismus Association, the World Pediatric Ophtalmology and Strabismus Association, and the Lindberg Society. Her published research includes studies on amblyopia, the risk of strabismus and amblyopia in children with hydrocephalus, glaucoma, corneal neovascularization, corneal crosslinking, dry eye, and retinal findings in Parkinson’s disease.

Clinical focus

Dr. Altıntaş evaluates and treats a range of pediatric and adult eye conditions. In pediatric ophthalmology, her work includes strabismus (misalignment of the eyes) and amblyopia, a reduction in vision in one eye that typically develops in childhood. She also assesses refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism, as well as keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea becomes progressively thinner and cone-shaped.

Her adult practice includes glaucoma, cataract, and blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelid margins. Within neuro-ophthalmology, she sees patients with visual symptoms that may relate to the optic nerve or visual pathways, including ocular migraine and eyelid myokymia, an involuntary twitching of the eyelid. The appropriate approach depends on the individual findings, and a decision on treatment is made only after examination and review of any prior investigations.

How Dr. Altıntaş works with international patients

Dr. Altıntaş consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments, and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options.
