Vusal Mahmudov, MD is a cardiovascular surgeon at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Cardiovascular Surgery unit. Dr. Mahmudov’s clinical work centers on structural and valvular heart disease. He assesses and treats patients with aortic valve stenosis and other heart valve diseases, as well as children and adults with congenital heart diseases. Pediatric cardiovascular surgery forms one of his two subspecialty areas, and he evaluates pediatric cases for surgical treatment where this is indicated by the diagnosis and the child’s overall condition.

His areas of expertise also include minimally invasive approaches in cardiac and aortic surgery, specifically minimally invasive coronary bypass surgery, minimally invasive aortic aneurysm surgery and minimally invasive valve surgery. Whether a minimally invasive technique is suitable depends on the individual patient’s anatomy, diagnosis and general health, and this is discussed with the patient after a review of the findings. In vascular surgery, Dr. Mahmudov treats venous insufficiency, performs varicose vein treatment and manages peripheral vascular occlusions. In all of these areas, the discussion with the patient focuses on the diagnosis, the treatment options that are relevant to that diagnosis, and what each option would involve.

How Dr. Mahmudov works with international patients

Dr. Mahmudov consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as echocardiography, CT, MRI, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges the appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options, including whether surgery is indicated and which approach may be considered.
