Prof. Ferhan Öz, MD

Prof. Ferhan Öz, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 49 years in medicine, and his clinical work covers ear, nose and throat disorders, voice and swallowing problems, balance disorders and head and neck cancers. He has been working with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2001.

Dr. Öz studied medicine at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine between 1977 and 1983 and then worked at Siirt Health Training Center from 1983 to 1985. He completed his specialty training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology in 1989, and in 1988 he trained at the University of Iowa Dept.of Otolaryngology Head &Neck Surgery in Iowa City, Iowa, USA. In 1995 he worked as an ENT specialist at Kütahya Military Hospital, became an associate professor of otolaryngology and spent time as a visiting clinician at the New England Medical Center Dept.of Otolaryngology Head &Neck Surgery in Boston, USA. He became Professor of Otolaryngology in 2000. He is a founding member of the İstanbul Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery Association and president of the Voice, Speech and Swallowing Disorders Association. He is also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the European Laryngological Society, the European Academy of Otology and Neuro-Otology, The Voice Foundation, the Turkish Association of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, the Turkish Foundation of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, the Larengoloji Association, the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology Research and Development Association and the Confederation of European ORL HNS.

Clinical focus

Dr. Öz’s areas of expertise include head and neck cancers and laryngeal cancer, for which he assesses patients and discusses the treatment options that apply to their situation. He also evaluates and manages dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) and voice hoarseness, which are closely connected to his work in laryngology. Vertigo and balance disorders form a further part of his practice.

In nasal and sinus disease he treats sinusitis and performs septoplasty and septorhinoplasty. He also manages snoring, adenoid conditions and tonsil disease, including tonsillectomy. Whether a procedure is appropriate depends on the individual findings and is decided after clinical examination.

How Dr. Öz works with international patients

Dr. Öz consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
