Prof. Dilek Güven, MD

Prof. Dilek Güven, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, with a subspecialty interest in neuro-ophthalmology and a clinical background centred on medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery. She graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and completed her ophthalmology training at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1994, having worked as a research assistant in its Department of Ophthalmology from 1990. During this period she spent 1992 to 1993 as a clinical observer at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK. In 2017 she became a professor of ophthalmology at Health Sciences University Hamidiye Faculty of Medicine.

From 1995 to 2008 Dr. Güven worked as a specialist physician in the 3rd Eye Clinic of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital. Between 2001 and 2004 she was a researcher at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, Doheny Retina Institute, Los Angeles, CA, where in 2008 she also completed training in Argus II retinal prosthesis implantation. From 2008 to 2022 she was Head of the Ophthalmology Clinic and administrative and education officer at İstanbul Şişli Etfal EAH, and from 2017 to 2022 she served as a faculty member of the Department of Ophthalmology at Health Sciences University Hamidiye Faculty of Medicine and a member of its Ophthalmology Academic Board. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2022. Her memberships include board membership of the Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOD) İstanbul Branch, board membership of the TOD Medical Retina Unit, active membership of the Medical Retina Unit and active membership of the TOD Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit. Her published work addresses topics such as optical coherence tomography angiography, epiretinal membrane and macular hole surgery, retinal vein occlusion, retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy and retinal prosthesis imaging.

Clinical focus

Dr. Güven’s practice covers a broad range of retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachment, and retinopathy, including diabetic retinopathy. Her surgical work includes vitrectomy, and her publications describe vitrectomy combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation as well as glaucoma surgery following vitrectomy.

She also sees patients with glaucoma, cataract, myopia and colour blindness, and performs smart lens procedures. Her clinical work extends to paediatric ophthalmology and to conditions of the eye surface and eyelids such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Treatment decisions are made after individual examination, and the suitability of any surgical or lens-based option depends on the findings in each case.

How Dr. Güven works with international patients

Dr. Güven consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
