Prof. Kağan Tun, MD

Prof. Kağan Tun, MD is a neurosurgeon at Acibadem Eskisehir Hospital in Eskişehir, where he works in the Neurosurgery unit. His subspecialty interests are pediatric neurosurgery and spinal health, and his practice covers both adult and pediatric conditions of the brain and spine. He has more than 39 years in medicine and speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Tun studied at Ege University Faculty of Medicine between 1987 and 1993 and then worked as an emergency service physician and general practitioner at Turgutlu State Hospital from 1993 to 1995. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, İbn-i Sina Hospital Neurosurgery Department from 1996 to 2002, which included time in 2001 at Hopital Lariboisiére, Neurosurgery Service, Paris, France, under the supervision of Prof. Bernard George. He went on to a doctorate in anatomy at Ankara University, Health Sciences Institute (2002–2007) while serving as a specialist physician in the Brain and Nerve Surgery Clinic of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital (2002–2010), where he became an associate professor in 2010. From 2010 to 2011 he was Head of the Brain and Nerve Surgery Clinic at Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, and in 2015 he became a faculty member at Acıbadem University Vocational School of Health Services. He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association and the Türk Nöroşirürji Association and serves as a board member of the Turkish Neurosurgery Association Neurovascular Surgery Group. His published work includes studies on the anatomy of the axis and the anterior C1–C2 region, the prevention of epidural fibrosis after laminectomy and the effects of radiofrequency lesions on nerve tissue.

Clinical focus

Dr. Tun evaluates and treats brain tumours as well as spine and spinal cord tumours. In pediatric neurosurgery, his areas of expertise include craniosynostosis, tethered cord syndrome and cerebellar tonsillar herniation. These conditions are assessed on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s age, symptoms and imaging findings.

His spinal practice covers spinal surgery, the treatment of spinal deformities and spinal fractures, and minimally invasive procedures such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty and nucleoplasty. He also offers targeted injection treatment for neck, back and low-back pain. Whether a conservative, injection-based or surgical approach is appropriate depends on the diagnosis and the patient’s overall condition, and the options are discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

How Dr. Tun works with international patients

Dr. Tun consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel.
