Assoc. Prof. Özge Begüm Comba, MD

Assoc. Prof. Özge Begüm Comba, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Ophthalmology unit. She graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2010 and completed her specialty training in ophthalmology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2015. Her professional background in medicine spans more than 16 years.

After her residency, Dr. Comba worked as a specialist doctor in compulsory service with the Ministry of Health from 2016. She subsequently held specialist doctor positions at İstanbul Yeniyüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital and Yenibosna Safa Hospital in 2021. Between 2019 and 2021 she also held academic appointments at Yeni Yüzyıl University Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgical Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgical Medical Sciences Department of Ophthalmology, where she served as a doctor faculty member. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023.

Clinical focus

Dr. Comba’s clinical work covers a broad range of eye conditions. She assesses and treats refractive errors, including astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia, and performs excimer laser vision correction for suitable patients. Her practice also includes cataract surgery and smart lens procedures, as well as the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. In addition, she manages eyelid conditions such as ptosis and blepharitis and performs blepharoplasty. Her other clinical interests include keratoconus, macular degeneration and eye allergies.

Pediatric eye diseases form a further part of her practice. Dr. Comba has published research on optical coherence tomography angiography in children, on early ocular findings in pediatric patients infected with COVID-19, and on the risk factors, incidence and long-term outcomes of retinopathy of prematurity. Her research output also includes studies on trifocal intraocular lens implantation, the effect of a capsule tension ring on refractive stabilization, and accelerated corneal crosslinking protocols for progressive keratoconus, published in journals such as Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, European Journal of Ophthalmology and Ocular Immunology and Inflammation.

How Dr. Comba works with international patients

Dr. Comba consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example previous eye examination records, imaging reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination of the eyes and a discussion of the options that may be appropriate in the individual case.
